Arterial Line Placement

Didactic illustration prepared for the Graham Clinical Performance Center within the Department of Medical Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine. This center exists to teach medical students common procedures such as arterial line placement, intubation, and lumbar puncture.

The arterial line placement illustration is separated into three parts. The first part presents the Allen Test, a preliminary step to completing the procedure. If the patient indicates poor circulation as a result of this test, the patient is advised not to have an arterial line placed. Many graphics such as arrows and stopwatches help communicate the motions and important concepts of the procedure. Additionally, large illustrations and clear steps provide students with a quick reference while they practice.
